The Terminal Building was evacuated this afternoon in response to a suspected gas leak.

However, no gas leak was found … …

Instead the source of the unusual smell was traced to fruit that had been declared by an arriving international passenger.

MAF Quarantine Service manager, Owen Cotton said the Durian fruit had been declared by a passenger and was in MAF’s hands as quarantined.

Passengers and Customs officers in the Arrivals Hall were unaware of the fruit having been confiscated, and assumed a gas leak, resulting in a manual alarm that evacuated the whole building for 20 minutes.

The flesh of the Durian emits a strong, distinctive odour – some regard it as fragrant, while the uninitiated often find it overpowering or offensive.

Mr Cotton said the passenger who had brought the fruit had long left! “At least the evacuation was a successful exercise”, he said.
